Incision is a superhero origin story set inside a crime caper. 20 years after an event called The Hijack which changed the world and gave some people special powers, Las Vegas is ruled by gangs. A mercenary and gun for hire who owes a mafia lord is going through an identity crisis. Where his inner metamorphosis takes him, the lead forms a big part of the book.

The neon ambient colors of the book give it a post-apocalyptic and noir edge. Right from the beginning, the book picks up at a relentless pace. It has all the staples of a crime genre - The rival gangs, Mafia bosses, gang members who are loyal to only the word of their bosses and willing even to turn on each other when the time comes. Despite those familiar character tropes, the book steers away from cliches using the dystopian storytelling device.

Incision is a slick, post-apocalyptic, superhero, crime thriller, that sets up a rich world full of motley characters and a launchpad for an exciting series.

Art and Inspiration

The art is sharp, clean, beautiful and done with an expert hand. The artist Jay Red and colorist Maja Opacic, do a fantastic job playing with the shadows in the book very cleverly.  Their world-building is great and provides a sense of emptiness in a post-apocalyptic world. A lot of panels use Ben Day dots really effectively, adding a real depth to the colors in those panels.

The violence, though brutal, doesn’t get overly gory and has a great effect. I absolutely loved the lines in a few pages, especially towards the end when the action really picks up.
The ending does give an idea of the things to come as they’re going to escalate. It also expands and sets up a larger universe of superpowered characters.

Final Verdict

Incision is a slick, post-apocalyptic, superhero, crime thriller, that sets up a rich world full of motley characters and a launchpad for an exciting series. We will look forward to the future issues and excited to see what this world has to offer to us, we hope more slick action, superhero mayhem, mafia warlords and a fun blending of genre tropes.
